India

It is news to many that around 60 % of the greater
Himalayan range lie within India’s borders. Trekking here is without a doubt seasonal some regions are cut of from the outside world during the winters and others washed out by the monsoon. We can’t predict the weather but we can make honest recommendations about the best time to visit for clear days and spectacular views.

Spiti & Himanchal

This region is reached via road through the green foothills of Himanchal Pradesh.

The high altitude Spiti valley above the Sutlej River extends to the borderlands of Tibet. Spiti & Pin valleys, offer superb mountain biking and trekking. The area bears resemblance to Tibet in its culture, landscape and climate. A drive or Cycle along the epic Indo Tibetan hwy offers a chance to visit ancient World heritage Buddhist monasteries. There is very little accommodation but plenty of good camps. When touring this area by 4WD or supported mountain biking trips we are accompanied by a team of cooks who will take good care of you. Having comfortable tents and being fully supported allows us the freedom to stay in untouched scenic places away from the often-grimy towns. One unique trek in this region is the trek from Kibber at 4205m towards the challenging Parang La (5578m) to Tso Moriri Lake, the traditional trade route, still used between Spiti and the Great Tibetan Plateau. Due to its proximity to the Tibet border this area requires permits, which we will organize.

Ladakh & Zanskar

Very Similar to Tibet in its culture Ladakh offers endless Trekking options from short forays into the Markha valley to multi week trans Himalayan Adventures. The region is a spectacular, high altitude valley carved by the weather and rivers like the Indus and Zanskar.  Snow capped peaks form a stunning backdrop to ancient monasteries and oasis like villages with terraced fields, Buddhist stupas and water channels.

This region is accessed either via a spectacular road trip, from Manali or Shimla to Leh taking 4-5 days driving! Or a 1-hour flight from Delhi. It is possible to take a spectacular high altitude Road / mountain bike trip over the highest motor-able roads on Earth. Visiting one of the many valleys of Ladakh on foot offers a real insight in to centuries old culture.

To get the most out of Ladakh its good to get of the roads and do a little trekking that will give you access to the smaller villages where the way of life exists as it has for centuries.  Things change fast when roads reach the villages and unfortunately more valleys are having roads built all the time.  Trek, trekking into the Markha Valley Finishing at the monastery of Lamayuru. There is an established network
of village home-stays in Ladakh, Zanskar & Spiti.

Sikkim & Darjeeling

Despite its tiny size,
Sikkim is geographically diverse. Terrain ranges from tropical in the south to tundra in the north. The state shares borders with Nepal, Tibet and Bhutan. Kanchenjunga, 8586m, the world's third highest peak, towers above the hill state. Treks into this area give far-reaching & spectacular views along the backbone of the Himalaya massive to Everest and beyond. Access to Sikkim is via Calcutta. Darjeeling, famed for its fine tea estates can easily be added. Sikkim offers a handful of rewarding treks, through oak and coniferous forest along the Singalila ridge covered with Rhododendron and fluttering prayer flags. A recommended side trip from this area is to the Sunderbans Tiger reserve, a lush 2585 sq km park set amongst the mangroves and innumerable channels of the mouth of the Ganges.

Nepal

Often when most people think of Himalayan treks they think of Nepal with its famed Everest and Annapurna regions. Its popularity over the years has left many treks spoiled by unchecked development. That said superb treks continue to exist in regions lesser known. Manalsu & Nar Phu for example has limited the number of trekkers by imposing an entry permit fee. Ganesh Himal, also stunning less has managed to remain unspoiled simply by being less well known. When visiting these breathtaking areas we camp, as teahouses for which Nepal is known for rarely exist….

These treks are accessed via a half-day drive from Katmandu.

Bhutan

Due to the Bhutanese governments efforts to protect its rich Buddhist culture and environment, travel to Bhutan is often lauded as the last Shangri-La. A green heaven of preserved forests, snow capped peaks and clear rivers.

Trekking options are excellent and easily combined with cultural pursuits. The tiny kingdom is accessed via its only airport in Paro; from here travel on good roads to trekking regions is simple. For such a tiny country with a population less than 1 million Bhutan has a fair share of high-end properties. Travel to Bhutan is expensive but offers so much in return.
